Micellar water works through a process called micellar technology. The micelles in the solution have a hydrophilic (water-loving) and lipophilic (oil-loving) end. When applied to the skin, the hydrophilic end attracts and encapsulates dirt, oil, and impurities, while the lipophilic end breaks down and dissolves makeup and sebum.
The lipophilic ends of the micelles work to break down and dissolve the oil-based substances, effectively lifting them off the skin. At the same time, the hydrophilic ends of the micelles ensure that the dirt, oil, and other impurities are trapped within the micelles and do not redeposit on the skin.
Because micellar water does not require rinsing, it leaves a thin solution layer on the skin, which can provide a gentle moisturizing effect.
“I really like micellar water as an effective way to quickly cleanse the skin or remove makeup,” says Dr. Lucy Chen. “It doesn’t strip the skin’s barrier and is mild enough to use daily. Because of the micellar conformation, it also doesn’t leave the skin feeling oily or with a residue.”
